With activities abound, residents have a bevy of retreats and points of interest for active lifestyles. The populace can take advantage of Oregon's natural resources by fishing and crabbing, beach combing, boat tours and whale watching, surfing and kayaking, camping, hiking and biking.
Newport has developed a vibrant arts community of working artists, producing a year-round season of theatre, music, dance, exhibitions, readings and lectures. Residents can hit the green on Agate Beach Golf Course, shop for antiques at Aquarium Village, head out for a deep sea fishing excursion, visit the Gem and Mineral Gallery, or visit the area's favorite Oregon Coast Aquarium. The Aquarium offers active outreach programs and interactive exhibits of marine animals, sea birds and landscaping.
Area events include the Brewer's Memorial Ale Fest, the Newport Marathon, the Clambake and Seafood BBQ, the Oregon Tuna Classic and the annual Newport Jazz Festival, to name a few.
Education
Area students attend Lincoln County School District, including Sam Case Elementary, Yaquina View Elementary, Newport Middle School, Newport High School and Isaac Newton Magnet School. Higher education in the area is provided by Oregon Coast Community College, Oregon State University, or the nearby Linn-Benton Community College or Western Oregon University.
Local Economy
The community of Newport relies heavily on commercial fishing of crab, halibut, shrimp, halibut and rockfish, the logging of wood products and tourism. The most visited attraction is the Oregon Coast Aquarium, consistently listed as one of the "Top 10 Aquariums in America."
Nearby Portland serves as a major distribution center and technology products hub.
